Browlift

Fight the signs of aging with a brow lift! A browlift surgery is an outpatient procedure that minimizes the appearance of age by smoothing the forehead, raising the upper eye brows and reducing the appearance of frown lines that are commonly found between the eye brows. Some types of browlifts can also change the shape and position of the hairline.

For those interested in a less invasive procedure, a BOTOX® or DAXXIFY® chemical browlift may be an option for you.

Different Types of Browlifts

An endoscopic browlift is a short outpatient procedure. Pre-operative sedation or anesthesia may be used. To reduce the appearance of scars and minimize the risks associated with surgery, Dr. Elizabeth performs endoscopic surgery through several small incisions that are placed just behind the hairline. The brows are lifted from the inside, and small implants are placed very shallowly into the skull which allow the brows to be secured in an elevated position. They dissolve over the next 3-6 months, and the scar they leave behind under the scalp keeps the brows in their new desirable position thereafter. This procedure doesn't change the length of the forehead or position of the hairline in a meaningful way.

An open browlift is a longer outpatient procedure requiring general anesthesia. Incisions are made either just along the hairline (called pretrichial: it has the ability to shorten the forehead and change the hairline position and/or shape), or several inches behind it (called coronal: it displaces the hairline further back on the head, as the browlift is accomplished by removing scalp with hair on it at the incision). Both incisions extend from ear to ear on the scalp. The results are more dramatic, the results may be longer lasting than endoscopic browlifts, but the recovery is longer.

Hairline Surgery

An open browlift via a pretrichial incision (see above for description) is also known as hairline advancement or hairline surgery. It is performed to change the location and shape of the hairline. A browlift is also performed as a consequence of removing non-hair bearing scalp of the forehead to achieve hairline adjustment. Temporal recessions of the hairline can be significantly reduced and in some cases eliminated, the hairline can be rounded, and it can be brought forward by this procedure. This procedure requires general anesthesia.

Brow Contouring Surgery

Brow contouring (also known as cranioplasty) can be performed while having an openfsd browlift or hairline surgery, or on its own through either of the open browlift incisions (coronal or pretrichial, see above for description). Brow contouring is performed to improve sloping foreheads, prominent foreheads, asymmetric foreheads, or to make a masculine forehead appear more feminine. A drill is used to remove unwanted bone and contour the skull to create a desirable shape of the forehead depending on the patient's goals. This procedure requires general anesthesia.

Recovery from Brow Surgery

After your Albuquerque brow lift, hairline, or brow contouring surgery, your forehead will be wrapped with gauze and a bandage; this should help to minimize swelling and bruising. Some bruising and swelling is expected, however, and you may have black eyes or bruising of the eye itself (subconjunctival hemorrhage). These resolve over 7-14 days. It is also important to ice the area and keep your head elevated for several days after surgery to keep the swelling and bruising to a minimum. You will treat your incisions with antibiotic ointment twice daily. Mild to moderate discomfort, including headache, is normal and may be managed with prescribed pain medication. Sutures (stitches) or staples are removed after one week. Some swelling may persist for up to 6-8 weeks
